How to Create Products

These tutorials cover how to create a new product under your E-Commerce. We created your first products for you, which will act as a blueprint for creating your additional product. This Tutorial is a 3 part process:

Part I: Creating a Product Type
Part II: Creating a Product
Part III: Editing E-Commerce Product Properties

Part I: Creating a Product Type

Step 1
Click the Content tab on your primary navigation menu. Next select the Products tab from the horizontal grey menu.

Step 2
You are now presented with your Products manager. You will see a column to the left-side with three sections "Catalog-Product-Product Types". Your products are typically organized within Catalogs, for instance T-Shirts, Hats, or Sweatshirts. These help to organize your products. To create a new Catalog click the "Catalog" button and fill in the Catalog Settings to the right: title of the Catalog, Catalog Description, parent catalog and master page. If you are not sure either leave it blank or check the Catalog Settings for your existing Catalogs.

Step 3
You are now ready to create your Product Type. The Product Type is the blue-print for your product(s). Depending on how your existing products were created each of your products may have its own product type or you may share product types across several products. Familiarize yourself with your current product to see if you can use an existing product type.  View an existing product's Product Settings and see if the "product type" label is only attached to that product. If so you will need to create a new product type before continuing.

Step 4
Click the 'Product Types" button. You are now presented with all your existing products types. Click the "Create Type" button in the upper left corner.

Step 5
The Product Builder appears and you can now title this product type. Just type in the field "type name" to the left column. You are now ready to add other options like a model number or image gallery. These are not editable by your customer. This is NOT where you add size/color options. Click the "Product Elements" and you will see several pre-fab elements. Just drag-n-drop the Product Elements to the right side. Once they appear to the right click on-top until highlighted blue. You can now edit the new Product Element to the left. For example: I dragged the Standard Product Element "Checkboxes" over to the right. It appears as "Untitled Field". To edit this select the field and edit the title to the left, typing "Out of Stock", then fill in the options below separated by commas.

Step 6
Once you have finished adding "Product Elements" like Model No or Image Galley, click the "Save Product Type" button in the bottom right corner.

Part II: Create a Product

Step 1
Once you have completed the Product Type in Part I click the "Product" button to the left column between "Catalog" and "Product Types".

Step 2
A New Product will appear to the right side. You need to select the "Product Type" from the left-side drop-down menu. Next select the "Catalog" that you want the product to appear under.

Step 3
The Product Essentials will now be available to edit for this product. You can fill in the following information:

  • Product Name: *This is how you want the product to appear on your  live site
  • Slug: *This is auto-created from the title, no need to fill in
  • Product Description: *This is visible on your live site, info like material, size, color, why buy this product etc.
  • Product Image: Click the "Select Image" to open your Files Manager. You need to upload an image before you can attach it to a product.

-OPTIONAL-

  • Image Gallery: *You can attach an entire folder to be sub-views of your product. All images in that folder will show for the product.
  • Model No:*Often useful for inventory and ordering purposes.

Select the "Save" button in the bottom right corner. You will now see your product appear in the catalog selected to the left.

Step 4
Open the catalog to the left where your product is and click on the product. The "Product Settings" will appear to the right that you just created. At the top there are 3 tabs: Product Properties, E-Commerce Properties, Product SEO. Click the "Ecommerce Properties" tab.

Step 5
You will be presented with the Price Settings and Shipping Setting.
Price Settings:

  • Price: *Enter only numbers and decimals, Example: 12.99 -OR 12. Don't enter "$".
  • Advanced Pricing Options: *Check the box if you want to add "Quantity Discount" or "Variable Pricing"

Shipping Settings:

  • Do you ship this item?: *Check the box here if you ship the item. If you don't check the box customers can purchase without entering their shipping address/name.
  • Shipping Weight: *This is required for shipping if using UPS or USPS to determine shipping rates. Example: 1.5 -OR- .5

Step 6
Click "Save E-Commerce". Now view your live site to view your product. To add "Ecommerce Product Properties" like size/color continue to Part III.

Part III: Editing E-Commerce Product Properties

Step 1
Now that you have your Product created you can add on the E-Commerce properties like size and color. These are properties that the customer fills out when buying the product. Select the product from the left side column until the "Product Setting" appears to the right.

Step 2
Scroll down to the bottom of the product until the yellow or green box with the words "Products of this type (Product Type *This will vary Example: T-Shirt) have e-commerce properties that customers fill out when buying." Click the hyperlink of the "Product Type".

Step 3
Your are now presented with the Product Properties Builder. The default page is the "Product Properties" and you will see several pre-fab elements. Just drag-n-drop the Product Elements to the right side. Once they appear to the right click on-top until highlighted blue. You can now edit the new Product Element to the left. For example: I dragged the Standard Product Element "Dropdown List" over to the right. It appears as "Untitled Field". To edit this select the field and edit the title to the left, typing "Color", then fill in the options below separated by commas, "Example: Blue, Red, Orange".

Step 4
Click the "Save Product Type" in the bottom right corner. View your live site to view the updated product. If you are using variable pricing for products that have different size/price options per that size check out our tutorial How to Add/Edit Variable Pricing.
