Are you entering your full website domain name directly into your browser's address bar (www.example.com)? Or are you typing your business name into Google or another search engine?
If you're entering the site name into your address bar and the site isn't appearing, you may be typing the address wrong or experiencing a problem with your internet connection. Confirm that you have internet access and that you're entering the full website domain name, including the “.com” or “.net” or “.org” at the end. If your site still isn't loading, contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance.
If your site was launched within the past 24 to 48 hours, your site may not have fully propagated yet. In most cases, sites are available to view within just a few minutes or hours after launch, but on rare occasions, this process can take up to 48 hours. If this is the case, you may need to wait 24 to 48 hours for full propagation to occur, at which time your site will be live and accessible.
If you're typing your business name or domain name into Google or another search engine, there may be several reasons why you aren't able to find your website. See the question “Why is my website not showing up in Google?” for more information about this.
If you're not sure where you're entering your website name, contact our support team at email@example.com for assistance.

What is Google?
Google is a search engine. It allows users like you and me to find what we're looking for online. Without search engines like Google, the internet would not be as connected, accessible, and useful as it is today. Think of Google as a catalog that lists everything the internet has to offer.
Google is constantly adding new websites to its index. Google does this by sending “bots” throughout the internet to crawl websites and catalog every page, paragraph, link, and image found. There are more than 60 trillion web pages in Google, and this number is growing every day.
Google uses a highly complex algorithm to sort and return specific web pages for any given search query. The details of how this algorithm works are not made public. No one can directly control where a particular website will display in Google's search results for a given search query. Google decides which websites to show first based on hundreds of factors, many of which are unknown.

Why is my website not showing up in Google?
This is a difficult question to answer. There are hundreds of factors that influence where a particular website will show up in search results. Chances are good that your website actually is showing up somewhere in Google's index, but it may be buried beneath dozens or hundreds of other websites. In other words, your website is probably there, but it's not ranked high enough in search results for you to easily find it or see it.
In most cases, this is simply due to the competitive nature of the internet. For example, if you've just launched a new ecommerce store selling women's shoes, you may be hoping that your website will appear when you enter the keyword “women's shoes” in Google. Unfortunately, there are many large retailers and successful brands that are already dominating Google's search results for the keyword “women's shoes.” Due to the success and popularity of these competitors, it's unlikely your small ecommerce store will ever appear on the first page of Google for that keyword—at least, not without many months or years of effort and a substantial marketing budget!
Here are a few more tips for finding your website in Google.
If your website is new or was launched within the past 30 days, Google may not have had a chance to add your site to the search index. Read the answer to the next question, “How do I put my site in Google?” to learn what you can do about this.
If you're entering a very generic search term, such as “women's shoes” from the example above, you will probably see only major retailers and big brands ranking in Google's search results. These companies have big marketing budgets and usually possess the experience and expertise to claim the top spots in search engines. They often have entire in-house teams and departments working to make sure they stay on top! So, what can you do? For starters, it's always a good idea to try to carve out a unique niche for your company. What can you do to set yourself apart from the big players in your industry?
If your business is located in a particular city or neighborhood, you may have better luck finding your site by searching a specific keyword plus the city name, like “women's shoe store Riverside.” You likely won't see as many big national competitors appearing in results for these local keywords, although even these keywords can be highly competitive, depending on where you're located.
If you're not actively promoting your website, regularly adding new content, or carrying out any other ongoing optimization work on your site, it's unlikely that your site will move higher in search engines. It takes time and effort to improve your site's rank, and there are a number of best practices to follow that can help. How do I put my site in Google?
Google may have already added your website to its search index. Major search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo send “bots” throughout the internet looking for new sites and content to add to their search results. Google is very good at finding newly-launched websites and including them into its index. As a result, if you're promoting your website online at all, Google will most likely find you within 30 to 45 days after your site is launched.
In some cases, you may not want to wait this long. Or perhaps you haven't been promoting your site at all, and you've noticed that after 30 to 45 days, your site still is not indexed in Google. If this is the case, you can ask Google to crawl your site directly. The process for how to do so is outlined here. You'll need a Google Webmaster Tools account in order to submit your site.
Blazonco's PULSE marketing package includes direct submission of your website to Google. If you're just starting out and you're looking for introductory marketing that will help drive traffic and get your site into search engines quickly, consider signing up for our PULSE package. It's easy to do. Click here to begin!
How can I get my site to show up higher in Google?
Google's ranking algorithm is highly complex and takes into account many hundreds of factors when evaluating where a website should show up in search results. There is no single trick or technique to move a site higher; the precise formula Google uses to rank sites is top secret and not made available to the public, which means anyone who wants to get ahead must test and experiment with various methods over time to see what works and what doesn't.
It takes time and effort to improve your site's rank, but there are a number of best practices to follow that can help. Contact us to speak with one of our consultants about Blazonco's marketing services.
How can I get my site to show up first in Google?
There's no way to guarantee that any specific website will rank first in Google for a given keyword. Anyone who claims they can guarantee a “number one” spot in Google is not being entirely truthful, as Google's ranking algorithm is highly complex and constantly changing. To learn more about how to move your site higher in Google over time, read the question above, “How can I get my site to show up higher in Google?”
I want Blazonco to make my site show up higher in Google.
Great! Blazonco provides marketing services that can help improve your website's rank in Google and other search engines over time. I received an email saying my site isn't showing up in Google or that my site isn't built right to show up in Google. The person who emailed me offered to fix it. What's wrong with my site?
There's most likely nothing wrong with your site. The email you received is probably a spam message meant to trick you into signing up for services that you don't need. Unfortunately, there are many shady “online marketing firms” out there that will offer to “fix” your website for a fee. They try to scare business owners by making very broad, generic claims like “I see your website isn't showing up in Google.” These claims are immediately found to be false as soon as our team takes a look at the site in question. We see hundreds of spam messages like these every month. The best thing to do is ignore them.
What is SEO?
SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” SEO is a marketing discipline focused on improving a website's performance in search engines with the goal of increasing website visitors, customers, or conversions.
In general, there are two types of SEO. Both are important.
Defensive SEO: Defensive SEO is about making sure there are no errors or problems with your website that may be preventing your site from performing well in search engines. This type of SEO happens behind the scenes, and is usually carried out through a website audit that checks for known problems.
Active SEO: Active SEO refers to the ongoing process of continuously updating your website to improve search engine placement and performance. This usually involves a combination of content creation, social media management, business listing syndication, blogging, and other similar activities.
Is my website search engine optimized?
As mentioned in the answer to the question “What is SEO?” above, there are two types of SEO, defensive and active. Every Blazonco website is built with defensive SEO in mind, using clean code and a solid internal linking structure. As a result, our sites are “search engine ready” right from the start.
But defensive SEO will only take your website so far. In most cases, defensive SEO is not enough to get your site onto the first page of Google's search results. For that, you'll need active SEO, which is included in our more advanced marketing packages. To learn more, schedule a free consultation today.
What are keywords?
In the world of internet marketing, the word “keyword” most commonly refers to a search query entered into a search engine. Put simply, a keyword is a word or phrase someone might search for in Google to find your website.
For example, someone who wants to purchase a black leather jacket might go to Google and do a search for “black leather jacket.” In this example, “black leather jacket” is a keyword. Sometimes search queries composed of multiple individual words are referred to as keyword phrases.
Keywords can be used within the content of a website to help tell Google and other search engines what your site is about.
What are my keywords? What keywords are in or on my site?
If you'd like to know what keywords were entered into the meta keywords section of your website during the site build process, contact our support team at firstname.lastname@example.org.
With many of our custom marketing packages, we will identify a set of keywords to focus on with our marketing efforts. If you'd like to know what these keywords are for your account, contact your assigned marketing specialist or send an email to email@example.com.
Can I add more keywords to my site?
Yes! A good way to add keywords to your site is to create a new page on your site and write a few hundred words of content focused on a particular topic. The topic, ideally, should be whatever keyword you want to focus on, like 'black leather jackets” or “gutter cleaning in Wisconsin.”
Make sure to use the keyword phrase two or three times in the body content of the page. Include it in the headline of the page and the title tag as well. But don't overdo it—if you use the keyword more then three or four times on the same page, Google may penalize your site for “keyword stuffing,” which is a common spam tactic.
When I see my website in search engines, the name of the site is cut off or incorrect. Why is this? Can I change it?
The “website snippet” that appears in search results is typically composed of your site's title tag, domain name, and meta description. If the name of your site isn't showing up properly in Google, this is a sign that there may be something amiss with your site's title tag.
You can change the title tag of your site by logging in to the Blazonco admin tool and navigating to the “Settings” tab. Once there, you can edit the “Site Title” and “Tagline” fields. These fields comprise the title tag of your website's homepage.
Keep in mind that Google will only show the first 60 to 65 characters of your title tag. For best results, limit your title tag to about 60 characters, including spaces.
Important Note: Google has stated that they will sometimes ignore a site's title tag when displaying the site name in search results. This typically occurs if Google feels that the title tag is not relevant to the user's search query. In these cases, Google may substitute another snippet of text from your site in place of the title tag. If this is happening, the best thing to do is adjust your title tag to be more relevant.
When I see my website in search engines, the paragraph of text beneath it is cut off or doesn't say what I want it to say. Why is this? Can I change it?

You can change your site's meta description by logging in to the Blazonco admin tool and navigating to the “Settings” tab. Once there, you can edit the “Site Description” field, which is the meta description for your site's homepage.
Keep in mind that Google will only show the first 150 to 160 characters of your meta description. For best results, limit your meta description to about 150 characters, including spaces.

What is social media? What is Facebook? What is Twitter?
“Social media” websites and applications allow individual users to create personal profiles, connect with other users, and share information and content. Sites and applications like these are also referred to as “social networks.”
At the time of this writing, Facebook is the largest social network in the world, with over a billion active users. Twitter is another very large and popular network. Other major social media sites include LinkedIn, Pinterest, Google+, Instagram, and Tumblr.
Should I be using social media to promote my business?
Social media can be an important marketing channel for many businesses. It's a great way to grow your brand online, connect with customers, and build an audience of fans and followers. But success will vary depending on the nature of your business, your marketing budget and expertise, and your goals.
There is no single approach to social media marketing that will work for every business. And not every business needs to focus on social media as a marketing channel. But most businesses should, and there are several reasons why.
It helps legitimize your business. Social media is highly popular, and as a result, many successful companies use it to promote their products and connect with their customers. If your company doesn't have a social media presence of any kind, your business might be perceived as small or just starting out.
It drives word of mouth. Regardless of the nature of your business, word of mouth is most likely a very important source of new customers for you. Social media allows your customers to actively share information about your company and your products with their friends and families, increasing word of mouth referrals and brand awareness.
It puts your brand in front of your customers right where they are. Studies have shown that the average American spends more than 3 hours per day using social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and others. A strong social media presence can put your company front and center where your customers are spending their time.
It lets you hear what your customers and competitors are saying. If you're involved in conversations about your company that occur on social media sites, you can learn a lot about what your customers like and don't like about your products or services.
It lets you join in and shape the conversation about your company and your industry. Unless your business is completely new, chances are your customers are discussing your company on social media. Don't you think you should be involved in these conversations? By responding to unhappy customers, you can stop negative press before it becomes a problem, and by connecting with happy customers, you can boost loyalty and win repeat business. Social media serves as a kind of proactive reputation management. Don't ignore this opportunity to shape the public perception of your brand! While you're at it, you can establish your company as the expert in your industry by providing up-to-date insights and commentary on topics that matter to your customers and partners.

How can I get started using social media?
If you've never used social media before, we recommend choosing a single social network to start with. Facebook is usually a good place to begin. Create an account for yourself and start exploring! Most social media sites are easy to use, once you're registered and you have an account and you've tried it out.
When it comes to using social media to promote your business, this requires a bit more strategy and expertise. Blazonco provides custom marketing services that can include social media management. Schedule a free consultation with one of our consultants to learn more.

I need help using Facebook or Twitter or another social media platform. Does Blazonco provide support services to help me use social media?
No. Because we are not affiliated with Facebook, Twitter, or other social media platforms in any way, we don't have access to fix issues or provide support when our clients need help using these services on their own. If you're encountering an issue while using a social media site, we recommend contacting that company's support department directly. For example, Facebook provides a detailed Help section that contains the answers to a wide variety of technical issues.
Many of our marketing packages include social media management, in which we make posts to our clients' social media accounts on their behalf or run ad campaigns on these networks.
